Girard Rose

Girard Evergreen Hybrids

Notice the definite upright habit of the Girard Rose, which is unlike the spreading habit of other Girard hybrids.  This growth habit offers great opportunities to blend the Rose with annuals or compatible ground covers.

Who was Girard?
What are the Girard azaleas like?
Peter E. Girard, Sr. of Geneva, Ohio, began breeding and selecting azaleas in the late 1940s.  His descendants still own the nursery and continue to collect and offer all sorts of unusual and interesting plants.  The goals in developing these azaleas were:
  • Attractive azaleas which would be hardy on the shores of Lake Erie, with frequent snows and temperatures down to -10F
  • Good compact growth suitable for landscaping
  • Growth suitable for container plants
