Churches in the Laytonsville Area

St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church

The present St. Bartholomew Church has roots in colonial Maryland.  In 1726 the colonial legislature created Prince George's Parish, ninety miles long, stretching from what is today the District of Columbia through Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, Garrett, Allegheny, and part of Carroll counties.  When enough settlers could support a local place of worship, they could petition the legislature to provide them with a more convenient "Chapel of Ease."  In 1758 a Chapel of Ease was established at Brighton.

In 1812 the congregation received permission to establish a new parish - St. Bartholomew - and to build a new church.  In 1813 the vestry committee met at Bowman's store.  A small lot and frame church was built on land given by Thomas Griffith near the Hawlings River, three miles east of Laytonsville on Sundown Road, and consecrated May 9, 1819, by Bishop James Kemp.  Later a stone church was built, and the old building apparently became a schoolhouse until 1867.  St. Bartholomew Church was moved to Laytonsville in 1909 due to the distance for townspeople to travel for church services and the need for repairs to the chapel.

In 1954 Lew Kibbee, chairman of the building committee, presented plans for a new cinder block addition to the church which included toilet facilities, kitchen improvements, and a new boiler room.  Ben Elliott, a parishioner who was also an architect, drew the plans and the building was completed early in 1956.

Of interest in the present church as the silver chalice and paten dated 1826.  These were used at the Hawlings River Church and are still in use at communion services.  The brass vases are from the old church built in 1813.  The needlepoint kneelers at the altar rail and cushions on the choir pews were stitched by parishioners in memory of deceased members of the parish.

In 1895 St. Bartholomew Parish became a part of the Diocese of Washington.  The present church property borders Laytonsville Road, Sundown Road, and First Street.

Brooke Grove United Methodist Church,

now Goshen United Methodist Church

In the late 1850's and early 1860's, the Brooke Grove population worshipped at the Goshen Methodist Church.  With the Civil War over, nine members of the Goshen area decided they wanted their own church. This first Board of Trustees included Charles Brooks, Basil Frazier, James Hall, Reason Prather, Sr., Wesley Prather, Wesley Randolph, James Ross, Hezekiah Washington, Sr., and William Washington.

The Board purchased two acres of land at the price of $75.00 per acre, one acre for a church and one for a cemetery.  At that time the Brooke Grove congregation was a part of the Rockville Circuit, with pastors known as circuit riders traveling to Rockville, Emory Grove, Mt. Zion, Brooke Grove, Howard Chapel, Quince Orchard, Brown's, and Seneca.

As a result of growth, this circuit was divided into two parts  - Laytonsville and Rockville Circuits.  Under the leadership of the Rev. P. H. Matthews and later the Rev. J. L. Evans, a new church was dedicated August 17, 1871.

Only a few years later, this church was destroyed by fire.  Members and friends met in homes for prayer and praise services. A new church was begun in 1878 and dedicated on June 5, 1879.

Through the years the congregation and 41 ministers have worked not only in religious leadership but also in constant improvements to their church. A new organ, air-conditioning, chandeliers, new carpeting, acoustical tile ceiling, and in 1973 a new parsonage have been added to the Brooke Grove Methodist Church.

Laytonsville Baptist Church

The Laytonsville Baptist Church, located at 6855 Olney - Laytonsville Road, began as a home bible study in the late 1960's.  Soon, the congregation began to hold their first meetings in the elementary school.

By 1970, their numbers had grown enough to build a new facility.  The current senior pastor, the Rev. Vernon Ball,  and assistant pastor began their service in July of 1990.

As of 1998, the Laytonsville Baptist Church has five students in bible college.  Two will graduate this year and go on to seminary.  By 1999, the church will be able to retire its total debt obligation. Laytonsville Baptist Church has a strong mission emphasis and opportunities for involvement at all levels.

St. Paul United Methodist Church

After the Civil War, Goshen Methodist divided into two separate congregations.  Those who decided to affiliate with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, remained at Goshen.  Those who wanted to form a separate Methodist church decided to build within the town of Laytonsville. A Methodist campground near Laytonsville already existed for August camp meetings. In 1867 a building committee was appointed to collect money for a church.

The First Church

The October 31, 1868. minutes of the Quarterly Conference of Rockville Circuit show that two problems had been solved:  "First, we have secured a lot of sufficient dimensions through the kindness of John L. Layton on which we have erected a church, dimensions 46 feet by 30 feet at a cost of between $3500 and $4000.  Debt, only $31.93.  Second, we have also secured through the kindness of Mr. George W. Mobley, a lot of one acre, deed all right, adjoining the church property for a cemetery or burial ground, giving us one of the most desirable church properties in the bounds of the circuit."  By January 5, 1869, the new church had been completed.  Twenty-nine years late, in 1898, it required substantial repairs.

The Second Church

In 1912 St. Paul Church again needed repair.  The pastor organized a Willing Workers Society so that  church members repaired as much as possible.  The community raised $1200.00 for additional repairs. The work started in July was completed in November.  New stained glass windows with the names of donors changed the appearance of the church.  The total cost of repairs = $3000.00.

The alignment of Route 108 was slightly different in 1912 from the way it is today.. This earlier church was built very close to today's road and the current parking lot.  Travelers heading north through the town in the evening could see the light from the new stained glass windows especially well during an evening service.

The Third Church

A Forward Step Banquet was held in 1960, raising $48,000.00 and by 1961 the present St. Paul church was finished, complete with a basement dining room and kitchen.  The old stained glass windows and church bell reappeared in the new design to carry on the tradition of the original church.  Today  Saint Paul Methodist Church, once called the "Church at the Bend of the Road" faces the east, and each day is a busy one.
