William E.
Dwyer's application for a Civil War pension presents a family history.
William says that his father, Thomas Dwyer, was a soldier in the
Mexican War, 1846-48, and was killed in that war. After
that, his mother, Elizabeth Duvall Dwyer, took her four children
and moved to Cross Street in Baltimore. She died there in
1852. William lived at the Manual Labor School for three
years, then with Duvall relatives in Howard County, with his
cousin John W. Dwyer in Brighton, and then worked for Henry
Stabler near Brookeville until he was 18. Edward A. and
William E. Dwyer both enlisted in Company A, 1st Maryland
Volunteer Infantry, in 1861. William became a shoemaker.
This Thomas Dwyer may be the Thomas Dwyer in either of these two Montgomery County land records:

DISTRESSING EVENT. A most painful
event occured at Triadelphia on Sunday morning last, 9th
inst. A little girl, daughter of James Dwyer, about six
or seven years of age, walked out accompanied by a dog.
After an absence of two or three hours, her parasollette
was found lying on the bridge over the Patuxent river,
and the little dog was observed to be very intently
looking into the river from the bridge. This created
some surprise to the mind of the discoverer of the
parasollette, and upon making search, the body of the
little girl was found in the river. Life was entirely
extinct. It is supposed she accidently fell in, on
crossing the bridge. |
